Disaster Recovery - Best Practice

Hi,

I’m trying to understand how I can DR our vmware environment.  We currently run ESXi 5.1 and NetBackup Enterprise 7.6. Our datastores are stored on a NetApp FAS2070. We use a Scalar i80 tape library for regular backups.

We use SMVI to backup our datastores/vms to another NetApp but this won’t cover us in a DR scenario (e.g. Fire/Flood). We backup all our VM’s with NetBackup Client and, in theory; this could provide us with a level of DR but would mean we would need to restore each individual vm server.

I’m beginning to think that we should be backing up our datastores to tape. Is this best practice? Presumably in a DR situation, we would then recover our datastores to a new NetApp (or other storage) and point our new ESXi host to it. Is this right/possible or am I missing something? Can datastores be backed up to tape or do I need to backup the LUNs?

Regards,

Martin
