Hi,

i just tried the upgrade from VDP 5.5 to 5.6 and it stopped with this error message:

Installation of the package stalled

The installation stalled due to an error. Please use your snapshot to rollback the appliance.

1.) error message is not really helpful

2.) i rolled back and tried a 2nd time, no luck

Anybody a clue where to look for detailed error messages?

Thanks

Question about restoring using GhettoVCB

I have used ghettoVCB to restore VMs before  with no issue for a VM that contains only 1 hard disk.

Maybe I'm over thinking this but how do you perform a restore with 2 hard disks(C drive and D drive).

The C drive contains the OS and the E drive is for a Net publishing software. I guess I am asking how to perform a restore to that contains both disks.

Every time I try to restore I get the .tgz not supported message:

Hi

I setup my veeam infrastructure with a Veeam Backup manager (virtual) and Veeam Proxy (Physical).  The VM backup manager is on the network segment than vcenter. But the proxy and the repository Is on another segment so I want segmented the backup traffic.

At now, I can backup on Veeam repository on 172.17.x.x (backup network) but I don’t able to set the source for use the 172.17 network. It’s use the 128.2.x.x network (network production) and slow my production environment.

Maybe someone can give me a tips for do this ?

Edit the vSphere Data Protection summary Report

Is it possible to edit the vSphere Data Protection summary Report, which I receive every day as an email message?

I can see at the top of this report the number of successfully and failed backups.

But the Problem is, I can't see the failed machine at the top of this Report.

We have more than 300 machines in one VDP backup group and it is difficult to see, which one was failed.

Is there a template or a config file for this report?

Obtaining Daily Change Rate Information for VMs

Hi,

Does anyone know a way of getting daily change rates info for VMs?

I know you can obtain the information via Veeam One. VM Change Rate History: Veeam ONE Dashboards and Reports

However the TOP N value is limited to 10 and I have approx 4,500 VMs I want to run an analysis on these VMs to calculate change rates and determine the amount of storage required for delta snapshot files as we are looking at implementing a new virtualised backup solution based on TSM for VE for the environment in question.

vDPA SQL backup job failing

I'm testing out the vDPA SQL feature and have it working with my vCenter DB server fine and have setup 2 other SQL servers to do some testing and they both fail on the backups. One was a Windows 7 VM with SQL 2012 SP1 and the other is Windows 2012 with SQL 2012 SP1. The configuration seems to be the same on the vCenter DB server and the others but I get an error when trying to manually run the single database backup job. The log doesn't say too much.

How do I delete -ctk.vmdk files left behind by VMDR?

I had some issues and need to start over with VMware Disaster Recovery . At the moment I don't have a VMDR appliance but some of my VMs have -ctk.vmdk files. How do I get rid of them?

I found this article and followed the instructions. It "fixed" the VMs in question but the -ctk files didn't get removed by the delete all snapshot function.

Thanks.

VDP 5.8 Jobs Fail with "VDI: Failed to create snapshot." even though one is created successfully

Hey All,

Experiencing an issue where my jobs for VMs running on local disk are failing due to what appears to be a timeout on the take snapshot action. So at first I thought it was a timing issue, so I looked at that. It takes about 1 minute for quiesed snapshots to actually happen.

VDPmanual.png

I found the other articles that mention you should change the --subprocesstimeout=600 parameter to the /usr/local/avamarclient/var/avvcbimageAll.cmd file, so I did that with no luck. I also tried increasing the snapshot removal time, with no luck.

Still, after applying this and rebooting the appliance no dice, even though the snapshot is completing before the VDP task, it's still failing.

VMware KB: vSphere Data Protection backup jobs fail intermittently

VDPmanual2.jpg

I had another VM work just fine that was on a local SSD, but any disks that are otherwise located on slow local magnetic disk fail.

Looking at the logs, it would appear the most interesting entry is bolded and underlined below, which leads me to the following article, which says, your storage sucks, figure out why your snapshots are taking so long. Anyone have an idea how to increase the timeout when snapshots are being "TAKEN" as opposed to being removed? Next up will try removing queising from the config.

Can I add SDHC card to nested ESXi host and simulate as SSD?

$

0

I have nested three hosts (ESXi 5.5.0, release build 2068190) onto VMWare Workstation 10.0.4, each host assigned 2 vCPU and 6 GB memory, then I installed small VMs (Win XP, Ubuntu 8 and Small Linux ), because all my virtual storage comes from the physical hard drive, so there is no SSD in my storage, I wonder if I add SDHC (it is rated 70MB/s) through USB3, then somehow I could use this SDHC (32GB) as "SSD" card?  but I could not figure out, not even knowing if it possible (speedwise?),  or I have to have an external SSD drive (say 240GB) and connect using USB3 or Firewire?

here are the two pictures, first shows the SDHC connected to esx3, second picture shows the vmbha35, which refers to the SDHC card (it was formatted to NTFS before connecting to the host)

     Thanks!

VSA CommVault SIMPANA 10 SP9 VSA - Unable to read the disk for virtual machine

Hallo VMware Community,

we are running VSA Backup of CommVault SIMPANA. We are using a VSA Proxy. To the Proxy the VMFS-5 LUNs are mapped read-only so that we can use SAN as transport mode for the VMs which are located on that datastores.

We have testet many things but always still getting the error message "Failure Reason:Could not read data from the virtual disk" and the Job failed. At the beginning we started with one Subclient for all the VMs but now we switched to one Subclient per VM so that the jobs are running sequentially step by step but the error still occurs.

Error Code (at SIMPANA Console):

Is VDP considered a replacement for VCB?

$

My org recently upgraded to vSphere 5.5 from 4.1.  Prior to the upgrade we were using VCB to do a weekly dump of all VMs to disk storage as sort of an "ace in the hole" backup mechanism.

We already have a backup program in place that backs up the VMs, and we also use vSphere Replication and SRM.  I believe vSphere replication keeps the latest 10 snapshots from each VM, so we do have some point in time restore capabilities with that.

What I'm looking for is a way to get a full weekly SAN level backup of all VMs that I can dump to disk storage and then archive.  I understand that VDP has been introduced, but it doesn't really do what I'm looking for.  It backs up VMs, but it doesn't just dump them as raw vmx/vmdk files to a filesystem.  That's what I want to do.  Is there a way I can still do this like I did with VCB in 4.1?

Data protection used for two vCenters

Hello,

I'm trying to configure a Data Protection on my VMWare environment.

I had three vCenters, LAB, PROD1 and PROD2.

My intention is configure the Data Protection to backup data from two or more vCenters. Do I need to configure one Data Protection per vCenter Server?

Can I perform the cross configuration? Like DataProtection of PROD1 environment backup data from PROD2 vCenter and DataProtection of PROD2 environment backup data from PROD1 environment?

I tried to perform that on initial configuration and received an error telling me that VDP is not find in vCenter inventory.

Thanks

vSphere Data Protection Restore Client not displaying any files

Hello,

I am trying to work with VDP but I am having an issue with my files not displaying after I mount my backup.  I am getting no error message at any point, just my mounted backup with no file and an empty screen:

Untitled picture.png

I am running this on a Linux box and attempting to access VDP with Firefox or Chrome.  No matter what I try, I get the backup mounted with no issues and it looks as though there are no associated files in the backup pane.  When I click the dropdown arrow it says LOADING.... and then loads nothing.  After a few hours looking around on google I have only come across this non-error issue only 2 other times and neither of them had a solution.  So either someone here did something wrong that is so simple that I am missing it or it is something more complicated.  The only thing I could come up with on my own was that there is an issue with my current version of FLASH.

On page 14 under Software Requirements for VDP it says:

VDP 5.5 requires the following software:

Web browsers must be enabled with Adobe Flash Player 11.3 or higher to access the vSphere Web

     Client and VDP functionality

     http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-55/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vmware-data-protection-administration-guide-551.pdf

When I look at Firefox I am running 11.2.  If I go to try and upgrade I get a message that FLASH is no longer going to be updated beyond 11.2 with Linux.  I get a little bit of a different thing for updating Chrome, but same idea.  How can I use VDP on Linux if I cant update FLASH?  Or is there something else I am missing that I should try.  If other information is needed please let me know.

Thanks in advance for the assistance

Andrew

VDP 5.8 - Backup Exchange DB - integrity check everytime

Hello.

We have:

  • vcenter 5.5
  • VDP 5.8
  • Exchange Server 2010 SP3 without Database Availabilty Groups

We use VDP for full/increment for backup some Mailbox DBs about 700 Gb.

1-st question

How to disable the integrity check of Exchange databases? Integrity check task takes a very long time, it is about 4 hours. I'm not sure that cheking is really needed at every backup job...

During googling I find some documentation for Avamar which have option for disable DB-checking. Unfortunately this option does not exists at VDP or I can not find it.. Help me please.

2-nd question

I have gigabit link between Exchange, VDP and EMC Data Domain where backup stores. But during full backup I see in logs that data transmits with 50-60 Mbit/s speed (every 15 minutes i see in log message that about 5 gb transmitted to EMC DataDomain).

How I can increase the speed of backup?

VDP DR Plan

Currently we are using ESXi 5.5 in Primary Site also is DR Site, for vm backup we are planning to deploy VDP on both the sites.

Both sites we are using separate vCenter Servers.

In regards, of that we have few quries are as below:-

1. Can we use NFS DataStore as a Backup Destination?

2. We VDP Replicate backup vm to DR Site?

3. Can we register same vm in DR site, if yes than how many times?\
