Hello,
After I doployed adn configured vsphere Data Protection 6.0 unable to connect to the request VDP appliance
It has error "Unable to connect to the request VDP Appliance"
vCenter version : 6.0
ESXi version : 6.0
VDP version : 6.0
I try to unregister /mob >> com.vdp and new install but It's not working.
Please help and recommend

I'm evaluating vDP and have got the following trouble. After I changed SSL certificate at vCenter server, vDP jobs are failing permanently.
In the log I can see that vDP is trying to connect to the hypervisor where the VM is located. During connect disk mount fails with the error "unable to get local issuer certificate".
I can see that vDP is trying to connect to the port 902. I tried to verify that the certificate is correct using the following command:
echo -n | openssl s_client -connect $SERVERNAME:$PORTNUMBER | sed -ne '/-BEGIN CERTIFICATE-/,/-END CERTIFICATE-/p' > /tmp/$SERVERNAME.cert
I found that at port 443 certificate is correct, but at port 902 I get the following error:
140735160738656:error:140770FC:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:unknown protocol:s23_clnt.c:795:
$SERVERNAME here is a FDQN of the hypervisor.
I guess that means that port 902 is not protected with SSL. How can I fix that?
Update:
$ echo -n | openssl s_client -connect $SERVERNAME:902
CONNECTED(00000003)

We're having a customer doing a backup of a VM with a couple of TB's.
But looks like CBT is not being used, scanning the disks takes more than 24hours and we had to extend the backup window:
But after an initial backup, the next backup takes again more then 24hours but there are almost no changes on the disks.
looks like cbt is enabled. From the log: "scsi0:5.ctkEnabled = "TRUE"
"
Is there anyway to check if cbt is being used after an initial full backup.

John
Hi,
Is there any way to prevent users in vSphere Client from booting up a VM while you're performing a back-up?
Hello,
After a Storage VMotion of the VDP appliance, it became unresponsive. I'm not able to manage it through vCenter nor its web interface. I guess it's something related to its internal proxy.
When I try to enable it, it fails. I've already rebooted the VDP appliance and the VCSA. Also, I've checked via CLI the health of the VDP services and the backup data. Seems fine.
I've also tried to unregister VDP VM and register again. I need help
My environment:
ESXi 6.0 U2
VCSA 6.0 build 3634794
VDP 6.1
Here it comes some screenshots and logs of the issue:

I have a very weird issue.
This morning I rebooted my two VDP appliances and since then all my Backup and Replication Job definitions are missing in the VCenter web-client GUI for both VDP appliances. Also, in the Reports tab the only Info showing up is unprotected clients (which shows the correct VMs not protected); all other info (Task Failures, Job Details) throw an error/timeout
The Backups that had to run after I first encountered this incident this morning did run successfully tho. To me this means that the Job definitions are still present and alive but not showing up in the VCenter GUI.
Any ideas how to fix this? I tried rebooting my VDPs (again), VCenter Appliance, Data Domain Backup Storage. Nothing seems to help...
Environment:
VCenter 6 Update 1 Appliance
VDP 6.1.3
Data Domain 6300
Hello,
i'm using the newest VPD appliance with 2 TB storage.
Is it possible to resize (minimize) the storage?
Thanks

Hi All,
I just got problem in my environment. Here it is:
Before, the VM was backup normally during last 1 year. But, last week, the backup was failed. Here is failed notification:
Processing SERVER-A (1xx.1xx) Error: DiskLib error: [4].Success Failed to retrieve next FILE_PUT message. File path: [[datastore_name] SERVER-A/SERVER-A.vmx]. File pointer: [0]. File size: [3338].
My Environment Info:
VM Os : Windows Server 2003
VMware Esxi : 5.5
Vcenter Version : 6.0
Backup App : Veeam B&R
Additional Information : backup job for other VM's run normally
Why this error happen? What to do to fix this issue?
any suggestion will be appreciated.

Anyone knows if there's plans to allow VDP to backup VMs by host rather than by cluster?
It's important that new VMs get added to backup schedule automatically and that's why we are
using by cluster approach.
VDP size drives us to create more clusters to manage backups and this is kind of awkward situation.
Of course if VDP could be sized past 8 TB there would be no problems.
Is there any plans to allow bigger VDP appliances in the future or maybe include feature to
backup per host?
Thanks!
I rebooted my VPD appliance 1 hr ago and it has sat at this line now for as long.. What can I do. THe schedules replication and backup have started and all are failing.
Hi all,
Running Vsphere 5.5 U2, and VDP 6.0.
I am using a Server 2012 R2 VM to attempt a FLR (file level restore) and I get all the way to the point where I select a destination to restore the file to. When the window comes up the progress bar goes for a minute and then the window is blank. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Dan

When running a manual back-up everything is running fine.
Anybody a solution for this?
Thanks.
I’ve been using VDP (currently v6.1.4) in my vSphere v6.5 environment for a few weeks now and love it. But I’ve been getting very mixed signals from some VMware folks saying it should never be used for backing up the PSC and vCenter appliances. I currently have an external PSC and two VCSA’s registered with it. There’s an option to do a manual backup from within the configuration screen, but no options to do a scheduled backup.
Yet despite their warnings, VMware officially seems very clear that it can be used for backing up those items. See link below, for example...
“You can use vSphere Data Protectionor a third-party product that is integrated with VMware vSphere Storage APIs - Data Protection to back up and restore a virtual machine that contains vCenter Server, a vCenter Server Appliance, or a Platform Services Controller.”
I’m guessing that those who say no are concerned that the vPostgres DB doesn’t handle snapshots very well. But as long as the DB is quiesced before the snapshot is done, that shouldn’t be a problem, I would think. Doesn’t VMware Tools, which is installed in the VCSA, do that?
Anyway, I’d be interested in some more opinions. Is VMware telling this to all their customers privately, despite what is written in the official docs?
I have deployed a new VDP appliance and I set it up to run backups for my Exchange 2013 environment. I have a DAG setup with 3 mailbox servers and 2 Client Access Server that aren't in the DAG. The DAG related mailbox servers backup just fine. The two Client Access Servers do not backup at all. The VDP doesn't even see them. Any ideas what is going on here?
Hi,
Our setup:
4 VMWare hosts
1 Vcenter
VMWare esxcli = 5.1 or 5.5
VCenter = 5.5
We have Essentials Plus License
Maybe around 60 VMs spread out among the 3-4 VMWare hosts. All VMs running Linux (All Linux no Windows). All VMs are running open source front end web applications, Cache, Elastic Search (NO Mail Apps, Oracle or any Database apps or Corporate Apps).
What is a good low cost Data Backup and Recovery Solution that is simple to set up and requires no downtime on the VMWare hosts (no reboots if possible)? Checking out the Unitrends and VEEAM paid solutions but their licensing seem cost prohibitive for us.
Goal would be to take a nightly snapshots (keep like 3 - 7 days back) of VMWare host esxcli and VMs that are running and be able to restore from a backup in the event of hardware issue like a drive failure etc.
Thanks!
We recently changed domain administrator password and stop the domain administrator permission to the vCentre. Looks like now the VDP machine stop working.
The symptoms are: cannot access VDP via web, only ssh.
I looked trough the vdr-server.log and there are a lot of these errors:

I tried the dpnctl start all but it errors (see attached file).
Those machine worked until few days ago and now they gone!
Does anyone know how to resolve these issue?
Thanks in advance.

I am using vCenter 5.1 VDP 5.1

VDP being a free backup solution that looks pretty cool I wanted to give it a try.
After deploying the VDP appliance on my vCenter and quickly configuring it, I tried to create my first job to backup the VMs contained in a folder as the admin guide said it's possible.
I then realised that I didn't have the possibility to do so in the GUI. After investigations I found this VMware blog (Pretty old post but still seems accurate) : vSphere Data Protection and vCenter Server Folders - VMware vSphere Blog - VMware Blogs
So, technically, the VDP Administration Guide is accurate – you can select a folder when creating or editing a backup job. The catch is, the folder must be a Host and Cluster Folder. Unfortunately, a Host and Cluster Folder has very little value when it comes to organizing VMs for backup using VDP. Hopefully, we will see new and unique ways to organize and protect VMs in the future.
It basically says that we can use folders, but only "host and cluster folders" which can't host virtual machins.
So my questions are the following :
Thanks.
Hi,
does anyone have experience with assigning VDP to new vCenter Version 6.5?
I know we have to upgrade our VDP to Version 6.1.3. Are there any issues we have to be afraid of?
Cheers,
Daniel
Hello everyone,
Is there a way to export a of list all VMs being protected by a VDP appliance? (powershell command or just CLI command)
I'm actually trying to build a report of all VMs protected by our VDP appliances.
Thanks!
