VDP 6.1.4.30 SQL Agent and SQL Server 2016

I have an SQL Server 2016 and 2008R2 which are being backed up via VDP. I am trying to setup the Application Backup for SQL and have installed the Agent on my 2 SQL Servers. When I choose our 2008R2 SQL Server I can pick the Database to backup. However, when I choose our 2016 SQL Server none of the Databases are shown and I cannot do a backup. Is the VDP Agent not supporting SQL Server 2016?

VDP and VR cross vCenters

Hi,

So we have 2 vCenters one in our Branch Office the other in our Main.  The Main office has vCenter 6 while the Branch has vCenter 5.5 (do to Hardware Compat with 6.0 esxi). I am wondering if I would be able to run VMware Replication between these two vCenters? Yes I know i need to ensure Hardware Compat stays at 9 and ensure all other compatibility are monitored too. Will VR work between different  versions VR ver6 - VR ves 5? Also will VDP replicate across versions also or do both need to be same version which means same version vCenter?

vSphere 6.5 VDP 6.1.4 VMware Tools outdated

Hello,

This has been an ongoing issue with the last few VDP versions.

I update vSphere to the latest version (in this case 6.5.0 5224529) and then the VMware tools on VDP appliances throws a warning that it is out of date.

I learned the hard way that you cannot simply perform the "Upgrade VMware Tools" automatically... it just uninstalls it and then cannot install the new version.

In the past I would just update to the newest version of VDP (in this case 6.1.4) and the problem would go away.

However, it hasn't gone away...

1. Is this problem really hurting anything? Backups seem to be ok.

2. Is there a KB or something that acknowledges this issue and/or provides a fix?

Thanks!

How to backup the VDP appliance offsite for Disaster Recovery

$

Hey all,

I am trying to find out how to back up the VDP appliance offsite for disaster recovery.  We have 5 - 6 virtual servers that backup to the VDP appliance and that process works fine... but what happens if the building catches of fire and destroys the ESXi hosts that the VDP appliance is on?  How do you backup the VDP appliance offsite (using a cloud service like AWS or Azure or something)?

Thanks

VDP 6.1 Failed to Create SQL Server Backup Job, No Databases Showing up.

Hi,

I just deployed VDP Appliance 6.1 into our ESXi 5.5 host. Everything's running smoothly (backup-restore VM Image, File Level Restore, Backup verification etc.), but there is one issue: when I want to create Backup Job for SQL Server Database, there are several SQL Servers (computer name) showing up on drop down, but i couldn't see all the databases.

I suspect the problem might on the permission, i have tried this tips https://communities.vmware.com/thread/491546?start=0&tstart=0 with no luck.

VDP Appliance: 6.1.3 (downloaded OVA file from VMware website)

OS SQL Agent: Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard

SQL Server: 2014

VDP not working after upgrading VCSA to 6.5.0b

Yesterday I had some time on my hands, noticed 6.5.0b for vCenter appliance was released, and 6.1.4 vdp was available.

Upgraded vCenter appliance no problem (from 6.5.0a). Then tried to upgrade 2 vdp instances to 6.1.4 from 6.1.3. Both upgrades failed (no errors, just failed around 80% stating I had to recover from snapshot). Also, after reverting, the vDP plugin is no longer loaded in the vCenter web interface.

I restored the vdp appliance from snapshot, restarted, still no vdp icon to access. I also removed the vdp from the mob interface, and tried to re-register the vdp appliance using vdp-configure. It failed on re-registering to the vcenter instance.

At this point, I decided to try to just re-create my vdp instances. I downloaded the 6.1.4 ovf file, deployed, and during vdp-configure it fails (tried 3 times, on two different datastore types iscsi/nfs).

I still had the 6.1.3 ovf, so I tried to deploy the older version, fails with the same errors as 6.1.4 is failing with.

Keep in mind I deployed 6.1.3 a month ago with absolutely NO issues. I'm wondering if this has something to do with vCenter 6.5.0b.

The errors when deploying brand new instances (both 6.1.3 and 6.1.4) are attached a screenshots.

As mentioned above, I tried both on NFS and iSCSI datastores (iSCSI datastores running VMFS6).

Anyone know anything about this?

vDP 6.1.3 and vCenter 6.5 - No vDP in Home Screen, No Client Plug-In Appearing

$

Hi All,

I've been struggling with another issue in my home lab.  I upgraded to vCenter 6.5 last week and, at the same time, deployed a new vDP 6.1.3 appliance.  Try as I might, I can't seem to get the plug-in to appear anywhere within vCenter.

I have gone into the extensions section of http://<vcenter>/mob and only see config.vmware.vdp2.config.  I can't seem to get config.vmware.vdp2 to show up, even if I delete the .config entry and restart/re-register the vDP appliance.

I have also done the workaround where you log into the vCenter server and add the .war and .jar file manually into the vsphere-client directory, with no luck.

Anyone else seeing this issue?

Thanks,

Dave

Hello,

Is VDP 6.1.3 compatible with SQL Server 2016?

Unable to connect to the requested VDP Applicance VDP 6.1.4

I am attempting to deploy a new VDP 6.1.4 appliance in our vCenter Server 6.5 environment. I am able to deploy and configure the appliance without issue, all services are running, and I am able to ssh to said appliance. When I attempt to connect to the appliance from vCenter I receive the following error:

Unable to connect to the requested VDP Appliance.

Would you like to be directed to the VDP Configuration utility to troubleshoot the issue?

I have deleted the appliance from disk and tried this a second time with the same results.

I have gone through the vCenter registration in the Configuration a few times, trying local accounts and SSO/AD accounts with the same results.

I have NTP servers configured in my ESXi hosts, set the time zone in the VDP appliance and verified that the date and time are correct.

Another thread led me to check the mcserver.out info as there is a known issue in an earlier version with vCenter Server 5.5. While there seems to be warnings and exceptions I am not sure I can make heads or tails as to what they are.

Vmware backups not releasing unused space

My VMware appliances are near 93% full.  I went into the restore tab and deleted a bunch of old backups but it did not free up space on my backup appliances.  I thought when the garbage collection ran it would free up the space.  However, my garbage collection should have run last night during the maintenance window and it did not free up any space.  Why wouldn't I have more space after deleting backups?

Hi All,

I am having problems with my VPD backups. One of our backup jobs kept failing so I deleted the job and tried to create a new one but every time I go through the VDP new job wizard it fails with the following error:"An unexpected error occurred

The cause of the error is: *name of backup job*"

For example this is the error when testing is it on my antivirus VM:

It doesn't matter what I name the job I get this error every time.

Evaluating Vmware Data Recovery - licensing issue

Hi,

I recently upgraded to Vmware vSphere 4.1 Standard from ESX 3.5. I divided the license key I received from Vmware (4 cpu) for the 2 virtual hosts (2 cpu) I'm using.

I wanted to evaluate Vmware Data Recovery so I downloaded a trial copy of Vmware vCenter. But when I want to schedule a backup in Vmware Data Recovery I get the message "one or more of the selected virtual machines are on an unlicensed host". But when I check my licenses in vCenter every virtual host is correctly licensed ?

Only vCenter is not licensed (evaluation mode). Do I need a trial license key for vCenter and where can I get one ?

vDP backup only one disk

Hi,

i have a VM with 4 disk, the first is a normal vmdk with the system of about 40GB, the other 3 disk are RDM in virtual mode.

I have to backup ONLY the first disk, the one with the OS.

I try to make a backup with only this disk and it seems that all is ok, but when i try to restore it, vdp say that it cann't be restored
because there are no space on vmfs because he have registered somewhere that th VM have also other 3 disk very big.

How can i make a backu of ONLY the OS disk?

Thank!!!

VDP - How to add storage to store Backup

vSphere 6 - Incremental backups of CBT enabled VMs

$

Hi,

I'm testing with Backup Exec 15 the incremental backup of VMs.

The flags for "ctkEnabled" and "scsi<x>:<x>.ctkEnabled" are both set and "True", the file "*-ctk.vmdk" also exists.

There are no snapshots, the compatibility is ESXi 6.0 (VM Version 11).

The problem is that the full / incremental backups have the same size, so the incremental backups seems not to work.

Would it be possible to check whether this is a problem of VMware ?

thanks

Dirk

Monitoring vSphere Data Protection Status using cli/script

$

Hi,

I found that the backup scheduler service stopped running in the vSphere Data Protection Status in VDP Config Utility.

I would like to monitor service status using a script.

I noticed that PowerCLI + avamar.psm1 perhaps could be used for this but I can´t find any documents or reference for this?

Can´t event find the avamar.psm1 file?

A plus would be to also be able to get failed backups for the last day using a script. That way I could also send a warning message when this occurrs.

This way I could integrate this with our central monitoring system.

Thanks for any suggestions...
